About our marquee hire and assembly service

A marquee turns a garden, field or car park into a venue, but only if it is the right size, on the right ground and put up properly. Getting the size wrong, or leaving no room for the bar, dance floor and catering, is the most common mistake people make.

We plan and build marquees for weddings, private parties, corporate events, venues and festivals. That means checking the site, recommending a size and layout for your guest numbers, installing the structure with the right anchoring for the ground, and fitting flooring, lining, lighting and heating where needed. After the event the marquee is taken down and the site is left tidy.

Marquee hire and assembly: frequently asked questions

What size marquee do I need?

As a starting point, allow about 1.5 square metres per guest for a seated dinner at round tables, around 1 square metre for theatre-style rows and around 0.75 square metres for a standing reception. Then add space for the dance floor, bar, buffet, band and walkways. For example, 100 guests seated for dinner with a dance floor and bar usually needs a marquee of around 9 by 24 metres or 12 by 18 metres.

How long does it take to put up a marquee?

A small party marquee can go up in a few hours. A medium wedding marquee usually takes a day, and large structures with lining, flooring and lighting can take two or three days. Most marquees are installed one to three days before the event and taken down the day after.

Can a marquee go on hard standing or a car park?

Yes. Frame marquees can be installed on tarmac, concrete or paving using weights and ballast instead of pegs, or drilled fixings where the owner allows it. Traditional pole marquees need to be pegged and are best suited to grass.

What happens if it is windy or raining?

A properly installed marquee is designed to cope with normal UK weather, and rain is rarely a problem if the site drains well and flooring is used. In very high winds the event organiser may need to evacuate the structure, so we agree a plan for extreme weather before the day.

Do I need planning permission for a marquee?

Usually not. In England, the temporary use of land for an event for up to 28 days a year is normally allowed without planning permission, and marquees for one-off events are rarely an issue. Venues that keep a marquee up for a season, listed buildings and conservation areas can be different, so check with your council if the marquee will stay up for a long period.

Do I need a licence to hold an event in a marquee?

A private party with no ticket sales usually does not. If you are selling alcohol, providing regulated entertainment to the public or charging for entry, you may need a Temporary Event Notice or a premises licence from your local council, and larger public events often need an event safety plan.

What is the difference between a frame marquee and a pole marquee?

A frame marquee has an aluminium structure with no internal poles, so it can go on any surface and gives a clear open floor. A traditional pole marquee uses tall internal poles and guy ropes, has a classic peaked look and needs a grassed area with extra room around it for the ropes.

Can you heat a marquee?

Yes. Indirect diesel or electric heaters are the usual choice, ducted into the marquee so there are no flames or fumes inside. Linings, side walls and hard flooring all help keep the heat in, which is worth considering for spring, autumn and winter events.
